1. Functions of Surfactants

- Decontamination Effect: Anionic surfactants (such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate) and non-ionic surfactants (such as fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether) can reduce the surface tension of water. One end of their molecular structure is a hydrophilic group, and the other end is a lipophilic group. During the washing process, the lipophilic group will adsorb on the surface of stain particles such as oil and dust on clothes, while the hydrophilic group will face the water. When the clothes are agitated, the stain particles will be pulled from the surface of the clothing fibers into the water, thus achieving the purpose of decontamination.

- Emulsifying Effect: For grease stains, surfactants can emulsify the grease, that is, disperse large grease droplets into small ones, enabling them to be evenly dispersed in the water without aggregating and adhering to the clothes again. This characteristic helps to thoroughly remove grease stains, such as kitchen oil stains and human body secreted grease.

- Foaming Function: Some surfactants can produce abundant foam during the washing process. Although foam does not play a directly crucial role in decontamination, it can help wrap stain particles in it and give consumers a visual impression of good washing effect. However, there are also some low-foam or non-foam laundry sheets now. Through special surfactant formulations, they can ensure good decontamination effects while reducing foam generation.

2. Functions of Builders

- Increasing Alkalinity (Sodium Carbonate): Sodium carbonate can increase the alkalinity of the washing liquid. In an alkaline environment, many acidic stains (such as uric acid in sweat stains and organic acids in fruit juices) are more easily decomposed and removed. Meanwhile, the alkaline environment also helps to enhance the decontamination ability of surfactants because some surfactants are more active under alkaline conditions.

- Anti-redeposition (Sodium Silicate): Sodium silicate can form a colloidal protective film during the washing process. After stains are washed off the clothes, this protective film can prevent the stain particles from redepositing on the clothes. This ensures that the clothes are cleaner after washing and there will be no stain residues left. Especially when washing dirtier clothes or in environments with hard water, the anti-redeposition effect is particularly important.

3. Functions of Enzyme Preparations

- Protease: It is mainly used to decompose protein-based stains. Stains such as blood stains, milk stains, and egg white are mainly composed of proteins. Protease can break down these large protein molecules into small amino acids or peptide segments, making them easier to be rinsed off by water. Protease has the highest activity under suitable temperature and pH conditions (generally close to neutral and appropriate washing temperature) and can quickly and effectively remove protein stains.

- Amylase: It has a special effect on starch-based stains. If there are food residues on clothes (such as stains left by rice and pasta), amylase will break down starch molecules into small molecular sugars such as maltose. These small molecular sugars have higher solubility in water and can be carried away by the washing water flow, thus removing the starch stains on clothes.

- Fatase: It can decompose grease stains. It breaks down grease into glycerol and fatty acids. These decomposition products are easier to be dealt with by water and surfactants, thereby improving the removal effect of grease stains. Especially for some difficult-to-remove animal and plant grease stains, fatase can play a very good auxiliary decontamination role.

4. Functions of Whitening Agents

- Whitening and Brightening: Fluorescent whitening agents can absorb ultraviolet light and emit blue fluorescence. When light shines on clothes, the blue fluorescence is superimposed on the light reflected by the clothes themselves, making the clothes look whiter and brighter visually. This whitening effect is particularly significant for white and light-colored clothes. It doesn't actually change the color of the clothing fibers but improves the appearance and color of the clothes through optical principles, making the clothes look newer and cleaner.

5. Functions of Fragrances

- Adding Pleasant Aroma: Fragrances can give clothes a pleasant smell. Different fragrance components can provide various scents. For example, the fresh lavender fragrance can give people a soothing and relaxing feeling, and the rich rose fragrance can create a romantic atmosphere. These scents can cover up the odors that clothes may have picked up before washing and continue to emit fragrance during the wearing process, enhancing the wearing experience.
