Differences between Bleaching Powder and Explosive Salt
Composition
- Bleaching Powder: Its main component is calcium hypochlorite Ca(ClO)_2. It is a white powder with a chlorine - like odor. Industrially, it is prepared by the reaction of chlorine gas with lime milk, and the chemical equation is 2Cl_{2}+2Ca(OH)_{2}=CaCl_{2}+Ca(ClO)_{2}+2H_{2}O.
- Explosive Salt: The main component is sodium percarbonate 2Na_{2}CO_{3}\cdot3H_{2}O_{2}. It is a white crystal or crystalline powder. When it reacts with water, it decomposes into sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide, and hydrogen peroxide plays a role in bleaching and decontamination.
Working Principles
- Bleaching Powder: In water, calcium hypochlorite in bleaching powder undergoes a hydrolysis reaction to generate hypochlorous acid HClO. The chemical equation is Ca(ClO)_{2}+2H_{2}O = Ca(OH)_{2}+2HClO. Hypochlorous acid has strong oxidizing properties. It can oxidize colored substances into color - less ones, thus achieving the bleaching effect. At the same time, hypochlorous acid can also sterilize and disinfect. It can denature the proteins of bacteria and viruses, and then kill them.
- Explosive Salt: After the explosive salt dissolves in water, the decomposed hydrogen peroxide exerts an oxidizing effect under alkaline conditions. Hydrogen peroxide releases active oxygen, which can break the molecular structure of organic pigments, fade stains and pigments, and achieve the effects of bleaching and decontamination.
Safety
- Bleaching Powder: Bleaching powder has certain risks. Its strong oxidizing property may irritate and damage human skin and respiratory mucosa. If ingested by mistake, it may cause poisoning, with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. During use, bleaching powder should not be mixed with acidic substances, otherwise, toxic chlorine gas will be generated. For example, when bleaching powder is mixed with toilet cleaner (the main component is hydrochloric acid), the reaction Ca(ClO)_{2}+4HCl = CaCl_{2}+2Cl_{2}\uparrow+2H_{2}O will occur. Chlorine gas is a toxic gas that endangers human health.
- Explosive Salt: Compared with bleaching powder, explosive salt is relatively mild. However, since its decomposition produces hydrogen peroxide, high - concentration hydrogen peroxide is also corrosive to some extent and may irritate the skin and eyes. But when used according to the instructions at an appropriate concentration, the safety is relatively high.
